- Description: Because TB doesn’t have much of a pass rush, the secondary will likely struggle to contain the DAL receivers without Winfield. With Mayfield out as well, TB will have to run efficiently and play good situational football on offense to stay in the game.

**CONTEXT/STORY**

Tampa Bay is 0-4 to start the season and in dire straits coming into this game, with Baker Mayfield out with a thumb injury and star safety Antoine Winfield out with a rib injury. The defense has been keeping them competitive (all four losses by 6 points or less), but the offense has been anemic, even before Mayfield got injured. And while undrafted rookie QB Jalon Daniels has shown some flashes of dual-threat capability, asking him to lead the Bucs to victory in **Dallas** in **primetime** on a **short week** is a tough assignment, to say the least.

Meanwhile, Dallas is 2-2 and coming off of an exciting comeback victory vs. in-state rival Houston, where Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb led the Cowboys to a blistering 28-point second half to steal a win on the road. Offense has not been the problem for the ‘boys, who are averaging 30.5 PPG this season. The problem is that the defense is last in the NFL in EPA per play allowed, 30th in total yards allowed, and 28th in points allowed. Fortunately, they're facing a TB team that has struggled to score, but they will still need to execute for 4 quarters in order to secure the win.

**KEY MATCHUPS**

**KM #1 - DAL receivers vs. TB coverage**

- DAL’s passing offense was elite last year and is strong again in **volume** this year, but passing **efficiency** has declined from 7.6 Y/A --> 7.1 Y/A.
- TB was near the bottom last year in passing defense, but has improved this year to 10th in pass yds allowed, 15th in yards/attempt allowed (6.9), and 14th in passing TDs allowed (6)
- **Insight:** DAL should move Lamb to test exchanges, then use Pickens or Ferguson when help shifts. TB should try to vary safety help without Winfield, prevent deep completions and force sustained drives; blitzes will be costly if coverage communication fails.
- **Advantage: DAL**

**KM #2 - TB run game vs. DAL run defense**

- TB was **below** average in rushing last year, but has improved this year to **average** in total rushing yards and rushing TDs, and **10th** in yds/carry at 4.4
- DAL D was **below** average in run defense last year, and has regressed **further** this year to 31st in rushing yards allowed (601), and 28th in yards/carry allowed (4.8), although week 4 vs. HOU was solid
- **Insight:** TB should use varied run directions and the QB keep threat to make Dallas account for every gap. DAL needs to maintain outside containment and make Irving cut toward its interior strength.
- **Slight Advantage: TB**

**KM #3 - TB pass rush vs. DAL protection**

- TB tied for 18th in sacks produced last year (37), and is tied for 25th in sacks produced this year (6).
- DAL tied for 9th in fewest sacks allowed last season (31), and is tied for 5th in fewest sacks allowed this season (6).
- **Insight:** DAL should identify the extra rusher and use quick completions before taking deeper shots. TB needs to change its pressure source, threaten the middle and retain enough coverage to contest the first read. OL Smith’s activation would strengthen Dallas’ case; while ineffective TB blitzes could amplify Cowboys’ passing advantage.
- **Advantage: DAL**

**KM #4 - DAL run game vs. TB run defense**

- DAL had a potent rushing attack last year (9th in both yds and yds/carry), but has been **ineffective** this year, ranking only 25th in yards and 22nd in yards/carry (3.8)
- TB's rush defense was **average** efficiency last year (14th in yds/carry allowed), but has been a strength this year, ranking 2nd in yds/carry
- **Insight:** TB should try to control the interior and tackle without surrendering easy coverage behind it. DAL should vary the point of attack and use runs to support its passing threats. If the early handoffs repeatedly fail, forcing additional carries would give away the offense’s best matchup.
- **Advantage: TB**

**KM #5 - Special Teams**

- DAL FG accuracy is down this year (due to 3 missed from 59+), but returns have been a highlight - 6th in kickoff-return average (28.1) and 10th in punt-return average (11.2)
- TB has not missed a FG yet this season, and returns have been a highlight - 3rd in kickoff-return average (28.9) and 9th in punt-return average (11.4) - but its punting is last in the NFL (36.9 net average)
- **Insight:** Dallas must fix its kick protection (2 blocked FGs in the last two weeks); Tampa Bay needs better net field position and better punt placement.
- **Advantage: Even**

**INJURIES/ABSENCE**

Tampa Bay

- **Doubtful/Out:**
  - S Antoine Winfield Jr. - major loss to secondary - changes the entire dynamic of defense
- **Questionable:** K Chase McLaughlin (groin/hip) - would further impact their ability to score if he is unavailable

Dallas Cowboys

- **Doubtful/Out:** no significant players
- **Questionable:**
  - OT Drew Shelton - impacts O-line depth

**Weather**

- Won’t be a factor since AT&T stadium has a retractable roof.

**PROJECTIONS**

DAL has a high-powered offense averaging 30.5 PPG this season, but the defense has been giving up 28.0 PPG. Meanwhile, TB has struggled on offense, but the defense has been keeping them in games. Because TB doesn’t have much of a pass rush, the secondary will be under a lot of pressure to contain the DAL receivers, which seems doubtful given that Winfield will be out. And with Mayfield out as well, TB will have to run efficiently and play good situational football on offense to stay in the game.

- **TB:** 1-2 TDs + 2-3 FGs = 13-23 pts. **MIDPOINT \~18**
- **DAL:** 3-4 TDs + 2-3 FGs = 27-37 pts. **MIDPOINT \~32**
- **Score differential: DAL by 14, total 50**

**THE VERDICT**

- **Spread: DAL -8.5 / TB +8.5 → PICK** \- DAL.
  - Our projections suggest DAL should win by \~14, so we see plenty of margin here.
- **Total 47.5 → PASS**
  - We project a total of 50, so there’s not enough margin here.
- **Moneyline: DAL -490 / TB +380 → PASS**
  - Prefer the spread here
