**CONTEXT/STORY**

DET finished a disappointing 9-8 last season, just a year after being the #1 seed in the NFC, and came into this season with a bunch of question marks, including a new offensive coordinator, some key player changes, and injuries to both of their starting safeties and the starting Center.

They barely escaped NO in week 1 at home, winning 31-30 in overtime, as the defense basically collapsed in the second half, allowing **Tyler Shough** to rack up **410 passing yards and 3 TDs** for the game. The offense, led by the electric Jahmyr Gibbs and always dependable Amon-Ra St. Brown looked good as usual, but they must quickly figure out how to **stop** opponents to have any chance to win in Buffalo.

The Bills finished 12-5 last year, and won a playoff game in Jacksonville, but lost to Denver in the divisional round. They then **overhauled** their coaching staff and defense in the offseason, firing head coach Sean McDermott and promoting Offensive Coordinator Joe Brady, and releasing veterans Joey Bosa, Matt Milano, Tredavious White, and Jordan Poyer, all former Pro Bowlers. Despite all the change, expectations were high coming into the season, and the Bills answered the call in week 1, outplaying the Texans on both sides of the ball and coming away with an impressive 36-31 road victory.

**KEY MATCHUPS**

**KM #1 - BUF pass rush vs. DET protection**

- BUF re-tooled its pass rush during the offseason and was effective in week 1 vs. HOU, registering **3 sacks** and **2 forced fumbles**, both of which were recovered by the Bills
- DET’s O-line unit did a nice job protecting Goff in week 1 against the Saints (only 1 sack allowed), despite changes at three positions - Penei Sewell moved to Left Tackle, first round rookie Blake Miller started at Right Tackle, and backup Center Juice Scruggs filled in for FA acquisition Cade Mays (IR)
- **Divergence:** the market may think DET O-line issues have been resolved, but rookie RT Miller faces off against Greg Rousseau (2 sacks, 2 FF) on Thursday
- **Advantage: BUF**

**KM #2 - DET’s pass rush vs. BUF’s protection**

- DET tied for the **4th most** team sacks LY (49), led by Aidan Hutchinson (14.5). The unit recorded **5 sacks** against the Saints, so they are clearly a force to be reckoned with
- BUF allowed only **2 sacks** on 29 dropbacks vs. a HOU defense that ranked 4th in pressure rate in 2025\. This unit finished **3rd** in pass-blocking efficiency last year, so the week 1 performance was legit
- **Divergence:** the market will likely be focused on the Hutchinson-Brown matchup, but we think that matchup will be pretty even, and DET will have to generate pressure elsewhere in order to disrupt BUF’s passing game
- **Advantage: Even**

**KM #3 - DET receivers vs. BUF secondary**

- DET has a lot of weapons in the passing game, led by All-Pro WR St Brown, deep threat Jameson Williams, top-tier TE Sam LaPorta, and RB Jahmyr Gibbs, who is dynamic after the catch
- Meanwhile, BUF has a completely overhauled secondary, with four new/unproven starters going up against one of the deepest, most dangerous receiving groups in the NFL
- **Divergence:** the market is likely focused on individual matchups, but the BUF secondary has a **volume** problem - they have to pick their poison against DET
- **Advantage: DET**

**KM #4 - BUF receivers vs. DET secondary**

- The acquisition of DJ Moore gives Josh Allen his first legitimate WR1 since Stefon Diggs. Alongside breakout TE Dalton Kincaid and slot receiver Khalil Shakir, Buffalo's revamped passing game is built to be highly explosive
- Meanwhile, DET’s secondary has been **decimated** by injuries, with both starting safeties out for the first 4 games. Their absence was obvious during Sunday’s game against the Saints (Tyler Shough 410 pass yds, 3 TDs)
- **Divergence:** agree with the consensus view - the Bills should have a big day passing
- **Advantage: BUF**

**KM #5 - DET run game vs. BUF run defense**

- The Lions were middle-of-the-pack last year in rushing yards, but looked unstoppable on Sunday vs. the Saints (165 yards on 33 carries and 2 TDs)
- Meanwhile, BUF was **28th** in rush yds allowed last year and **tied for last** in rushing TDs allowed. They held HOU to 124 yards (3.9 ypc), but gave up 2 TDs to former Lion David Montgomery, including an 18-yarder up the middle
- **Divergence:** no divergence from consensus view - the Lions should have a big day running
- **Advantage: DET**

**KM #6 - BUF run game vs. DET run defense**

- The Bills **led the NFL** in both rushing yards and TDs last season, but only managed 86 yards (4.1 ypc) vs. the Texans. However, Josh Allen did score two rushing TDs, and passed for 334 yards and another 2 TDs, so the run game got the job done in terms of opening up the pass game
- DET’s run D was **average** last year, and they did little to address this in the offseason. While they held the Saints to 91 yards (3.6 ypc) on Sunday, they’ll be facing a much stronger run game against the Bills, led by last year’s rushing leader James Cook, and of course, Josh Allen
- **Divergence:** no divergence from consensus view - the Bills should be able to run effectively against the Lions and score at least 1 TD on the ground
- **Advantage: BUF**

**INJURIES/ABSENCE**

Detroit Lions

- **OUT:** S Brian Branch, S Kerby Joseph, C Cade Mays, RB Isiah Pacheco
- **Questionable:** OT Blake Miller, C Juice Scruggs

Buffalo Bills

- **OUT:** no significant players listed
- **Questionable:** LB Terrel Bernard, Defensive Tackle TJ Sanders, RB Ty Johnson

**PROJECTIONS**

Everything in our analysis points to this game being a shootout. Neither team is strong defensively but both have high-powered offenses led by some of the best players at their respective positions in the NFL. We expect an exciting, high-scoring game with Buffalo winning due to a slightly better defense and home field advantage.

- **DET projection:** 3 TDs and 2-3 FGs = 27-30 pts. **Midpoint 28.5**
- **BUF projection:** 4 TDs and 2-3 FGs = 34-37 pts. **Midpoint 35.5**
- **Score differential:** BUF by \~7, Total \~64

**THE VERDICT**

- **Spread:** BUF -4.5 --> **PASS**
  - Like to have at least a 3-pt cushion to bet the spread
- **Total:** 53.5 --> **PICK - Over. Bet: 5 units**
  - We project a total in the 60s, so think there’s plenty of margin here
- **Moneyline:** BUF -208/DET +173 **→ PICK** **\- BUF to win.** **Bet: 10.4 units**
  - While there isn't enough cushion to bet the spread, we think BUF will win this game at home
- **Player prop: Jahmyr Gibbs anytime TD -256 at Underdog. Bet: 1 unit**
  - BUF has one of the worst rush defenses in the NFL, so we doubt they’ll be able to stop Gibbs from scoring
- **Player prop: Josh Allen passing yards Over 249.5 -115 at Underdog. Bet: 1 unit**
  - Normally, it's about 50/50 whether Allen will surpass this total, but with the Lions safeties out (and the fact that they gave up **410** yards to Tyler Shough), we think Allen should be able to cover
