CONTEXT/STORY
The 2026 NFL season opens with a grudge match: seven months ago Seattle embarrassed New England 29-13 in Super Bowl LX, and now the champs host the rematch. NE made some big moves in the offseason (AJ Brown, Kevin Byard) and tried to address weaknesses on the O-line and pass rush that SEA exposed. Unlike last year, expectations are high coming into this season, but the schedule is much tougher, so we expect some reversion to the mean.
SEA lost Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker, Pro Bowl corner Riq Woolen, and some other defensive starters, and is dealing with some key injuries going into week 1 (Charbonnet, Emmanwori, Richman). New OC Brian Fleury has never called offensive plays at any level. Regardless, expectations for this young, highly talented squad remain high to start the season.
KEY MATCHUPS
KM #1 - NE pass rush vs. SEA protection
- NE manufactures pressure from the interior
- SEA's protection is soft at RG (Bradford ranked 112th by PFF)
- Loss of Walker means no play-action cushion for Darnold
- Divergence from consensus: market still anchoring to Darnold's clean postseason run, but forgets that he led the NFL in turnovers during the regular season (20) and posted the highest turnover rate of any QB while under pressure (7.8%)
- Advantage: NE
KM #2 - SEA pass rush vs. NE protection
- Everyone is both a potential rusher and a potential dropper
- Loss of EDGE Mafe --> more reliant on interior pass rush + disguised schemes
- NE interior O-line is weak point - new Center-Guard combo: Wilson has taken 0 snaps at Center in NFL
- Maye was the NFL's #1 off-script scrambler last season - his ability to escape the pass rush will be key
- Divergence from consensus: market anchoring to 6 sacks and 11 QB hits in SB, but that was partly due to LT Campbell's torn MCL - protection should be better in this game, but SEA will still get home
- Advantage: SEA
KM #3 - SEA run game vs. NE run D
- SEA will rely on rookie Jadarian Price, but lack of experience (9 carries/game LY in college) means he's probably not ready to make an impact
- NE run D was 6th in yds allowed during the regular season at 4.2 YPC and held playoff opponents to 3.1 YPC
- Divergence from consensus: market underestimating magnitude of dropoff from not having Walker/Charbonnet - if Price can't run outside, play-action becomes ineffective, and Seattle will find it difficult to move the ball
- Advantage: NE / Under
KM #4 - AJ Brown/NE WRs vs. SEA secondary
- Addition of Brown + Doubs significantly upgrades weapons for Maye
- SEA depth at corner and safety a question, especially if Emmanwori cannot play
- Divergence from consensus: market underpricing losses in SEA's secondary + addition of Doubs to NE’s WR room --> NE should be able to move the ball better than in SB
- Advantage: Even
KM #5 - Special Teams
- Seattle has the edge vs. NE in both kicking (Myers led the NFL in points LY) and punting (Dickson 2nd team All-Pro)
- Both teams have potential game-changing returners (Shaheed and Jones) --> wash
- Divergence from consensus: market underpricing importance of special teams in what will likely be a close game
- Advantage: SEA
KM #6 - Coaching/Play-calling
- New SEA OC Brian Fleury has never called offensive plays at any level - will he be able to make the in-game adjustments vs. an elite defense?
- NE DC Zak Kuhr's first full year, but he called 20 games last year, so proven
- Divergence from consensus: market expecting minimal disruption to SEA’s play calling given that the system has not changed, but underpricing the potential impact in week 1
- Advantage: NE / Under
INJURIES/ABSENCE
New England Patriots
- OUT: LB Harold Landry, OT Marcus Bryant - Landry expected, but loss of Bryant weakens O-line depth for NE --> + SEA pass rush / Under
- Questionable: RB TreVeyon Henderson - expected to play in week 1; backup Stevenson is solid
Seattle Seahawks
- OUT: RB Zach Charbonnet, OL Mason Richman, S Bud Clark - Charbonnet expected, but loss of Richman and Clark hurt depth
- Questionable: S Nick Emmanwori - if he is unable to start week 1, SEA secondary looks vulnerable --> +Over
PROJECTIONS
We expect a low-scoring, defensive battle with at least one turnover from each side. We give SEA the slight edge because they should win the field position battle and have the better field goal kicker.
- NE projection: 1 TD, 3-4 FGs = 16-19 pts. Midpoint ~17.5
- SEA projection: 1 TD, 4-5 FGs = 19-22 pts. Midpoint ~20.5
- SEA should win by ~3 points, with a total ~38
THE VERDICT
- Spread: SEA -3.5 → PASS - too close to call
- Total 44.5 → PICK - UNDER. Bet: 5 units. Defenses will dominate and decide the game
Risk: a return TD or defensive TD - Moneyline SEA -189/NE +157 → PASS - same reason as the spread
